 3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the surface of objects, and structures in the field of view of the scanner, and stores this in the form of “Point Cloud” data. The Point Cloud data may comprise millions of points that represent the scanned object, in a 3D virtual world as an exact replica of what exists. Typically, the Point Cloud data is used to create a scale digital model or a 3D graphical rendering. Point Cloud data is often used as a bridge between physical objects and modern manufacturing. This is achieved by converting the data into computer-aided design (CAD) models.

 3D Laser Scanning is used to capture and analyze the “as-built” condition of facilities after construction. Typically, laser scanning technology is used to quickly inspect and determine overall dimensions, and rapidly detect issues that could delay repairs. 3D Laser Scanning is well suited to analyze bolt-hole locations, elevation changes, and abnormal orientation. 3D Laser Scanning can be used in combination with statistical analysis software to maintain and predict quality on a live plant or during the construction of a facility.
